A Study on a Group of Fikirtepe Neighborhood Residents Related to Their Ways of Coping with Stress, Symptoms of Psychological Diseases and Needs for Psychological Assistance
Abstract
This study aims to determine familial characteristics and psychological health features of parents and children in a neighborhood with low socio-economic level and to implement a “Psycho-Educational Support Program” for the people where necessary. As a field study, this study has been conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a descriptive research method is used and through this enriched method, qualitative and quantitative data are collected together. Qualitative and quantitative data of the research have been collected over 49
adults. In the light of the quantitative data, 97 primary school students have formed the response group. The quantitative data have been collected with Family Acknowledgement
Form (FAF), Short Symptom List (SSL) and Coping with Stress Scale (CSC). The qualitative data have been collected with interview technique. In the analysis of the data, the correlation between the sub scales of the ways of coping with stress and psychological symptoms is considered. By means of the regression analysis method, the physiological
symptoms predicted by a certain way of coping with stress are tested and the significancy of the statistics is found to be 0.5. Following the analyses, it is found that in ways of the coping with stress having a total of 34.22 symptoms, desperate approach predicts depression, anxiety, anger and hospitality, obsession and paranoia; surrendering approach predicts phobia; self-confident approach predicts personal sensibility. In response activities, individual psychology consulting, pshyco-educational support and interactive seminar
services are offered to 16 consultants, 81 primary school students and 152 parents respectively.
