Organizational Citizenship Behavior of Teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how much the teachers behave according to
organizational citizenship process in their schools. Organizational citizenship behavior is
about sportmanship and alturizm, it is not a formal compulsative process. To define a
behavior as an organizational citizenship one, it must not to be gifted or punished directly or
indirectly in an organization. These kind of behaviors represent the activities that develop the
functions of organizations as a wholeperson.
In Republic of Turkey, it is a traditional and historical reality that teachers, principles
and other staff in a school environment have experienced the organizational citizenship
behavior by working days and nights. Organizational citizenship behavior consists of
preventing the organization from distructive behaviors, improving the skills and capacities,
structuring an effective and common network among the staff. All of the staff need to
contribute to this process. In that sense, organizational citizenship behavior is related to
general performance of an organization.
The samples of the research are 719 teachers who work in different educational levels
in Istanbul in 2002-2003. In the research, reliability value is counted as Croanbach
Alpha=0,9593.
Five sub-dimensions are resulted from the factorial analysis. In the analysis of the
datum, while getting the information of teachers about organizational citizenship behavior, the
average was given and “t” value. If the opinions between and in the groups have differences,
Tukey HSD and LSD tests have been given to find out the resources of the differences. In the
end, all of the datum is expressed and discussed in the tables.
