Year 2002, Volume: 16 Issue: 16, 1 - 12, 25.12.2013

Abstract

It is known that one of the functions of school is to provide socialization of individual,
awareness of his/her culture, history and institutions. Another function of the school is to
teach children opportunities that the society provides and how to use these opportunities
appropriately. One of the aims of social studies program is to prepare stage one students of
basic schools to society’s life.
This study aimed to determine views of stage one students in relation to social studies
course. Study’s population was fourth and fifth grade students from different suburbs of
Istanbul.
Study’s questionnaire was prepared by the teaching staff from Primary Social Studies
education program in Ataturk Faculty of Education/Marmara University through interviews
with fourth and fifth grade primary students.
We think that this study will provide some suggestions for effective social studies
teaching, in which the social studies course is usually presumed as a memorizing school
subject, in order that the students who are between concrete and abstract learning levels may
develop positive thoughts.
