Abstract

Developing and Investigating Certain Variables in Relation to the Disposition Toward Connecting with Nature Scale (DCNS) for 60-to-72-Month-Old Children

Year 2022, Volume: 55 Issue: 55, 106 - 130, 29.01.2022

Abstract

In recent years, technology and industrialization have affected people’s lifestyles and led them to feel alienated from nature. However, studies have revealed the positive effects spending time in nature has on human health and environmental behaviors. Measuring the level of children’s disposition toward connecting with nature, which has a decisive role on their health status and environmental behaviors, and to make interventions to increase this disposition when necessary are important. This study aims to develop a scale for measuring 60-to-72 month-old children’s disposition toward connecting with nature and to examine this disposition in terms of certain variables. The research uses a quantitative survey design. The study group consists of 478 children between 60-to-72 months old children enrolled in the preschools, kindergartens, or 1st grade in the Altındağ, Çankaya and Yenimahalle Districts of Ankara Province. The item factor loadings range from 0.417 to 0.720. 2 / df = 1.367, which is less than 5. CFI =0.925 and TLI = 0.918, which are greater than 0.90, and RMSEA is less than 0.08. Heise and Bohrnstedt’s reliability coefficient (Ω) was calculated as 0.904; McDonald’s reliability coefficient (ω) is 0.989, and the Pearson product-moment correlation value is 0.852. Thus, the DCNS has been found to be a valid and reliable scale consisting of one factor and 23 items. The analysis results show children’s mean total scores on the disposition scale to not differ in terms of gender, monthly household income, or taking care of plants. The analysis results also show single children to have higher dispositions than those with two or more siblings and children with a pet to have a higher disposition than those who spend no time with animals.
