Abstract

One of the components which Butor talentedly tried to explore in his novels is the theme of setting. The events generally occur in the closed settings and cities. The novelist focuses attention on the walls, the building and the streets of cities reminding of labyrinth. These are the circumstances in which we always exist. The settings are presented in the way that is interweaved with each other. Besides, the scenes of description have some transitions from one setting to another. In Butor’s novels the presentation of setting elements includes original and contemporary approach. When one returns the past in the time dimension, he also returns the setting where the event occured in the past. The standpoint in question puts forward the breaking up and sudden transitions in the presentation of the setting due to cinema techniques.
