Abstract

Acar (2018), Pizam & Sussmann (1995) tarafından geliştirilen “20 tipik turist davranışı” ölçeğinden yararlanarak oluşturduğu gözlem formunda yer alan parametrelerin uygulanabilirliğini test edebilmek amacıyla 14 Temmuz – 2 Ağustos 2016 tarihlerinde on adet günübirlik tura katılmıştır.

INVESTIGATING THE BEHAVIORS OF PACKAGE TOUR PARTICIPANTS: A PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION RESEARCH ON SOUTH KOREAN TOURISTS

Year 2021, Volume: 16 Issue: 56, 792 - 824, 31.07.2021
https://doi.org/10.14783/maruoneri.815611

Abstract

Within the scope of this research, fourteen (6 men; 8 women) South Korean tourists’ package tour behaviors (interaction, shopping, bargaining, tipping and etc.) who visited Turkey on 7-13 August 2017, was investigated by using participant observation method. The participant observations were conducted by the first author, also a professional tourist guide. The researcher was introduced to the tourist group as an intern in order to observe their natural behaviors much better. The participant observation form developed by Acar (2018) was utilized while evaluating the observations. With the purpose of testing the applicability of the parameters in the observation form created by utilizing the scale of “twenty typical tourist behaviours” developed by Pizam & Sussmann (1995), Acar (2018) participated in ten daily tours on 4 July-02 August 2016. As a result of the pilot study, the unobservable parameters were excluded and the final observation form was carried out in daily tours in İstanbul, Kuşadası, Cappadocia and Antalya in which tourists from different countries participated. According to the results of this research aiming to investigate South Korean tourists’ behaviors in guided tours within the frame of the observation form aforementioned, it was suggested that the level of interaction between tourists were very high; that the couples moved in together while shopping and that they showed great interest in buying souvenirs and partaking in extra tours (balloon, belly dance, supper, jeep safari tours and etc.) offered by the travel agency. Furthermore, some tourists were observed to leave a tip for the tour leader and the researcher who was introduced as an intern to the group at the end of the tour. The tourist group, had their lunch in the far east cuisine restaurants two times during the package tour. On the other hand, high discounts on the tag price were applied to the tourist group in the tourist shops (leather, carpet, jewellery) by the salesclerks.
