Kedi ve Köpeklerde Yaşla İlişkili Kognitif Disfonksiyon: Güncel Durum ve Gelişmeler

Abstract

Veteriner hekimliği alanındaki ilerlemeler ve evcil hayvanların aile üyeleri olarak giderek daha fazla kabul görmesiyle birlikte, köpeklerin ve kedilerin yaşam süreleri önemli ölçüde artmıştır. Bunun sonucunda, yaşa bağlı hastalıklar daha yaygın hale gelmiştir. Kognitif Disfonksiyon Sendromu (KDS), özellikle yaşlı ve geriatrik hayvanları etkileyen, insanlardaki Alzheimer hastalığına benzer nörodejeneratif bir durumdur. Klinik belirtiler geniş bir çeşitlilik gösterirken genellikle azalmış aktivite, dikkat eksikliği, anksiyete, idrar kaçırma, amaçsız dolaşma, uyku-uyanıklık döngüsü bozuklukları, mekânsal dezoryantasyon, hafıza kaybı ve davranış değişikliklerini içermektedir. Etkilenen hayvanların beyinlerinde, beta-amiloid plakları sıklıkla, hem ekstraselüler yaşlı plaklar hem de kan damarlarının etrafında gözlemlenmektedir. Kaydedilen ilerlemelere rağmen, KDS' nin tanı ve tedavisi hala zorluklar içermektedir. Bu derlemede, KDS' ye ilişkin güncel gelişmeler sunulmaktadır.

Age-Related Cognitive Dysfunction in Cats and Dogs: Current Status and Developments

Abstract

With the continuous progress in veterinary medicine and the increasing acknowledgment of pets as family members, the life expectancy of dogs and cats has notably risen. As a result, age-associated disorders have become more prevalent. Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (KDS) is a neurodegenerative condition primarily affecting senior and geriatric animals, resembling Alzheimer's disease in humans. The clinical manifestations vary widely and often include decreased activity, impaired attention, anxiety, urinary incontinence, aimless wandering, sleep-wake cycle disturbances, spatial disorientation, memory impairment, and behavioral changes. In affected animals, beta-amyloid plaques are frequently observed in the brain, both as extracellular senile plaques and around blood vessels. Despite advances in understanding, diagnosing and treating KDS remains challenging. In this review, current developments related to KDS are presented.
