HORSE HAIR RAKU TECHNIQUE

Abstract

Raku is a popular low-temperature, fast-firing process that yields exciting, chance surface effects on ceramic ware. Raku firing technique has widely been used in many countries of the world by ceramic artists, since then discovered. Not much has changed with the traditional raku process over the years. But today, the use of different techniques and material by ceramic artists has developed new technique except than the traditional raku. One of these techniques is horse hair raku. Horse hair raku is a technique which requires no glaze. But if desired, ıt can be used. As a technique, the pieces of ceramic that has previously been bisque fired, is placed in the kiln and fired quickly about 950-1050 ºC. Once the firing is done, ceramic piece is removed from the hot kiln with metal tongs and set upon a refractory shelf or brick. And then stands of horse hair are draped onto the surface of the light-bisque ware. The burning hair leaves ıts mark permanently and exciting change surface effect on the ceramic ware. In this study, historical development and specification of traditional raku-horse hair raku will be overviewed and example of my own work will be given
