Effect of rootstock and grafting method on simultaneous grafting and rooting success in fig (Ficus carica L.)

Abstract

The development of efficient propagation techniques is essential for sustainable fig cultivation, particularly for the widely cultivated ‘Bursa Siyahı’ cultivar. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rootstock genotype and grafting method on the success of grafted rooted plant production under simultaneous rooting conditions. One-year-old cuttings of Taşlık (male fig) and Yeşil Güz (female fig) were used as rootstocks, and one-year-old shoots of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ were grafted using whip-and-tongue and approach grafting methods. In addition, cuttings of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ were directly rooted to compare propagation techniques. Rooting percentage, graft success rate, survival rate, shoot length, and shoot diameter were evaluated. The rootstock genotype had no significant effect on rooting percentage and shoot growth (P>0.05). However, the grafting method significantly affected rooting percentage and graft success rate (P<0.05). Whip-and-tongue grafting resulted in higher rooting (84.25%) and graft success (78.61%) than approach grafting. Graft success was significantly higher in Yeşil Güz (78.33%) than in Taşlık (70.66%) (P<0.05), while survival rates remained high across all combinations (87.80–90.24%). Plants propagated by cuttings showed higher rooting (81.52%) and greater shoot growth (105.15 mm) than grafted plants. The results indicate that whip-and-tongue grafting is a reliable method for grafted rooted fig production, and both male and female genotypes can be effectively used as rootstocks. The simultaneous application of grafting and rooting represents a practical and time-efficient propagation strategy, offering an integrated approach to improve nursery production efficiency in fig cultivation.
