The effects of different doses of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on postharvest quality of ‘Hass’ avocado fruit

Year 2017, Volume: 30 Issue: 2, 71 - 78, 01.08.2017

Abstract

Harvested avocado fruits were divided into four different groups and three groups were treated with 156.25, 312.5 and 625 ppb 1-Methylcyclopropene 1-(MCP), respectively. 1-MCP treatments were carried out at 5 °C for 24 h. Then treated and non-treated (Control) fruit were stored at 5 °C and 90±5% relative humidity for 2 months and some fruits were kept at 20 °C for 3 days to simulate a period of shelf-life. Fruits were removed from storage conditions at 15 days intervals and weight loss, fruit firmness, skin color, soluble solids content, titratable acidity and decay development during storage and shelf-life periods were determined. Furthermore, respiration rate and ethylene production of avocados were also recorded. The fruit treated with the highest 1-MCP dose (625 ppb) performed better performance than the other treatments in terms of preserving tested postharvest quality parameters. The results taken during shelf-life period at 20 °C were also found to be similar. There were no significant differences among fruit treated with all tested 1-MCP doses in terms of decay development. On the other hand, the highest 1-MCP dose (625 ppb) caused an irregular ripening in the fruit. Therefore, we concluded that 312.5 ppb 1-MCP application could be sufficient for 2 months storage of avocado fruit.

Farklı dozlarda 1-Metilsiklopropen (1-MCP) uygulamalarının ‘Hass’ avokado çeşidinin depolanması üzerine etkileri

Year 2017, Volume: 30 Issue: 2, 71 - 78, 01.08.2017
