Digital Trend Analysis and Forecasting of Sustainable Hydroponic and Aquaponic Systems: Global and Türkiye-Based Perspectives on Aquaculture Integration (2015–2028)

Abstract

Climate change and the depletion of freshwater resources are increasing the global importance of sustainable food production systems, particularly soilless agriculture (hydroponics) and integrated aquaculture-based plant production (aquaponics). This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of public awareness and digital interest trends related to these “green” and “blue” agricultural technologies at both global and national (Türkiye) scales. Relative Search Volume (RSV) data obtained from Google Trends (GT) for the 2015–2026 period were used. Without applying additional transformation, and in order to preserve periodic shocks in information-seeking behavior and natural variance, future projections up to 2028 were generated using the Exponential Smoothing (ETS) algorithm. The findings indicate that digital interest in hydroponic systems has reached a higher and more continuous level both globally and in Türkiye, suggesting greater public visibility and sustained online attention, with peak RSV values reaching 100. Conversely, while interest in aquaponic systems is concentrated in water-stressed regions and island nations globally, it follows a markedly low and flat trajectory (0–5 index) in Türkiye, indicating a prominent digital awareness gap. These findings should be interpreted as indicators of public attention and digital visibility rather than direct evidence of physical adoption or sectoral implementation. Within this scope, the study provides a comparative digital perspective on the online visibility of emerging sustainable production systems and highlights the relevance of interdisciplinary discussion around aquaculture-linked food production in Türkiye.
