Development and Investigation of the Effectiveness of Group Psychoeducation in Increasing Internet Altruism Among Adolescents

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of an internet altruism group psychoeducation program on adolescents' levels of internet altruism. The study was conducted with 10th-grade students who volunteered to participate and were enrolled at Anadolu High School during the 2022–2023 academic year. The study employed a 2x3 split-plot experimental design (experimental and control groups × pretest, posttest, and follow-up test). Data were collected using the ‘Personal Information Form’ and the ‘Internet Altruism Scale’. The nine-session internet altruism psychoeducation program developed by the researchers was applied to 11 students in the experimental group over a period of nine weeks. Each session lasted approximately 80 to 90 minutes. The data were analysed using two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA). The analysis revealed that the internet altruism scores of adolescents in the experimental group who underwent group psychoeducation were significantly higher than those in the control group in the final test. In addition, the positive effect of the program was found to persist in the follow-up test. These results demonstrate that the program developed is effective in increasing internet self-esteem in adolescents.
