The purpose of this study is to reveal the quality of the measurement instrument used as
the final exam which was implemented at Mersin University School of Foreign Languages at the end
of 2002-2003 academic year considering its psychometric characteristics such as item difficulty
index, item discrimination index, and test reliability. The findings related to the item discrimination
index indicated that 4 items (0,11-0,20) used in the exam were very difficult, 11 items (0,24-0,36)
were difficult, 25 items (0,41-0,59) were moderately difficult, 33 items (0,62-0,80) were easy, and 21
items (0,82-0,95) are quite easy. The findings related to the item discrimination index indicated that
22 items could not discriminate the students who acquired the intended behaviours and who did not.
Besides, 49 items could discriminate the examinees who had the necessary knowledge for responding
to the items correctly. The reliability of the measurement instrument was found as 0,89. It can be
stated that the measurement instrument is adequately reliable.
