Aim: This study aimed to determine the relationship between treatment adherence, health literacy, and family support in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Method: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 205 patients diagnosed with DM at a state hospital in Istanbul between December 2022 and July 2023. Data were collected using the Type 2 DM Patient Identification Form, the Type 2 DM Treatment Adherence Scale, the Health Literacy Scale, and the Hensarling Diabetes Family Support Scale. Results: It was found that participants had a moderate level of treatment adherence (mean score 91.36±7.14 out of 150 points), a moderate level of health literacy (mean score 78.76±9.11 out of 125 points), and a good level of family support (mean score 69.97±8.02 out of 96). In the study, a weak correlation was found between treatment adherence, health literacy and family support. Significant differences in scale scores were observed according to marital status, income level, cohabitation, type of DM treatment, hospitalization due to DM within the past year, the person assisting with disease management, fasting blood glucose, and HbA1c levels. Conclusion: The results indicated that individuals with Type 2 DM had low levels of treatment adherence and health literacy. It is noteworthy that patients with lower health literacy have poor treatment indicators, and those with lower treatment adherence had an increased need for hospitalization. Therefore, it is recommended to investigate the factors that hinder treatment adherence, refer individuals to appropriate counseling and educational programs to improve their knowledge and skills related to DM management, and support the involvement of family members in the treatment process.
