AbstractDetermination of the Knowledge Level of Women Working in Brothel About the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Objective: This research has been done as descriptive in order to determine the knowledge level of women working in brothel about the sexually transmitted diseases. Method: For this purpose, 50 of the registered 90 women working in a brothel in Mersin were included in this study. A questionnaire form has been used in order to determine the knowledge level of the women on the sexually transmitted diseases. Data obtained has been evaluated by SPSS for Windows (v. 11.5; SPSS INC. 2002, Lead Technology) package programme. Result: Sexually transmitted diseases knowledge point average was found as medium level in women working in brothel. It has been determined that women knew HIV/AIDS most related to the sexually transmitted diseases and that they know less about Hepatitis C and syphilis. Most of the women working in brothel preferred birth control pills as pregnancy preventing method and only 18% of these women were using condom, Conclusion: It has been determined that women working in brothel had inadequate knowledge about the sexually transmitted diseases, and most of them didn\'t use effective methods for prevention.
Amaç: Bu çalışma, genelev kadınlarının cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklar konusundaki bilgi düzeylerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Mersin ilindeki genelevde kayıtlı 90 kadından ulaşılabilen 50 kadın çalışmaya alınmıştır. Kadınların cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklar konusundaki bilgi düzeylerini belirlemek için anket formu kullanılmış ve elde edilen veriler SPSS (v. 11.5; SPSS INC. 2002, Lead Technology) paket programı ile değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Genelev kadınlarının cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklar konusundaki toplam bilgi puan ortalaması orta düzey olarak bulunmuştur. Kadınların cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklardan en çok HIV/AIDS hakkında bilgi sahibi oldukları; cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklardan sifiliz ve Hepatit C hakkında ise daha az bilgi sahibi oldukları belirlenmiştir. Genelev kadınlarının çoğunluğunun gebeliği önleyici yöntem olarak doğum kontrol hapını tercih ettiği ve sadece %18'inin kondom kullandığı saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Genelev kadınlarının cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklar ile ilgili yeterli bilgiye sahip olmadığı ve çoğunluğunun cinsel yolla bulaşan hastalıklardan korunmak için etkin bir yöntem kullanmadığı belirlenmiştir.

MEU Journal of Health Sciences Assoc was began to the publishing process in 2008 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Gönül Aslan, Editor-in-Chief, and affiliated to Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. In March 2015, Prof. Dr. Caferi Tayyar Şaşmaz undertook the Editor-in Chief position and since then he has been in charge.
Publishing in three issues per year (April - August - December), it is a multisectoral refereed scientific journal. In addition to research articles, scientific articles such as reviews, case reports and letters to the editor are published in the journal. Our journal, which has been published via e-mail since its inception, has been published both online and in print. Following the Participation Agreement signed with TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM Dergi Park in April 2015, it has started to accept and evaluate online publications.
