AbstractThe Seroprevalance of Brucellosis in Downtown Kahramanmaras Objective: Brucellosis, common in many countries and in Turkey, is a zoonotic disease causing serious economic losses. The aims of this study are to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in the population (age: 15 ≤) living in downtown Kahramanmaras, using Rose Bengal test (RBT) and standard tube agglutination test (STA), and to evaluate some relevant sociodemographic factors. Method: This study was conducted on 1100 people aged 15 and over, who were selected among the people living downtown, using cluster sampling method. A survey was carried out to determine the sociodemographic characteristics, occupational groups, animal husbandry, the symptoms of brucellosis and the ways of consuming milk and dairy products of the people partcipated the study. 1100 people\'s serum samples were analyzed with RBT and the STA test. Results: Using both test methods, it was determined that %99 (1089) of the people participated the study were seronegative whereas 11 (1%) of them were seropositive. Gender, age, educational level, occupational groups, job of animal husbandry, keeping animal vaccinated under veterinary control, and the ways of ice cream consumption was independent of seropositivity status (p>0.05). No significant difference in seropositivity was found among consumers of boiled and unboiled milk statistically (p>0.05).However, a significant difference was observed among consumers of boiled and fresh cheese with respect to brucellosis seropositivity (p<0.001). The relationship between a history of symptoms suggestive of brucellosis and brucellosis seropositivity was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the outcomes of our study, it can be stated that brucella seroprevalance is associated with local milk and cheese consumption forms. Therefore; educating people on brucella disease and its transmission routes may be important for prevention of brucellosis. Also, manufacturers should be educated about brucelossis. Collaboration with agricultural and veterinary associaitons as well as taking cognizance of field studies are important for the control of the disease.
