Aim: For the purpose of reducing the pain of children, families implement the methods that they know and/or hear before resorting to the medical institutions. The determination of these applications is very important for the planning of appropriate nursing interventions. This study was conducted to understand the traditional implementations carried out at home by the parents of the children admitted to pediatric surgery clinics with acute abdominal pain. Method: As a data collection tool developed by the researchers anticipated in this study, a 21 itemquestionnaire comprising 9 socio-demographic and 12 traditional practices questions was used. 128 mother/father were included to the representative sample for those resorted to the pediatric surgery clinics with the complaints of abdominal pain during the period of April-July 2013. Results: In the study, the average age of the children is 9.29±4.57; the average age of mothers is 35.02±6.70 years, and the average age of the fathers is 39.18±7.38. The avarage duration of hospital admissions for children is 24.48 ± 38.14 hours. The rate of implementing any traditional practice for treatment of abdominal pain at home by parents is 56.2%. The most applied traditional methods are massage, hot applications, herbal teas, and cold application, respectively. Conclusion: Families need sufficient information and support for effective management of abdominal pain in children
Amaç: Aileler, sağlık kurumuna başvurmadan önce, evde çocuklarının ağrısını azaltmak için bildikleri/duydukları yöntemleri uygulamaktadır. Bu uygulamaların saptanması, uygun hemşirelik girişimlerinin planlanması açısından önemlidir. Araştırma, akut karın ağrısı ile çocuk cerrahisi kliniğine başvuran çocukların ebeveynlerinin evde uyguladıkları geleneksel uygulamaları anlamak amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yöntem: Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan 9 soruluk sosyo-demografik ve 12 soruluk geleneksel uygulamalar bölümünden oluşan toplam 21 soruluk anket formu kullanılmıştır. Örnekleme, Nisan-Temmuz 2013 tarihlerinde karın ağrısı şikâyetiyle çocuk cerrahisi kliniğine başvuran 128 anne/baba dâhil edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan çocukların yaş ortalaması 9.29±4.57, anne yaş ortalaması 35.02±6.70 ve baba yaş ortalaması 39.18±7.38’dir. Çocukların hastaneye başvurma süreleri ortalama 24.48±38.14 saattir. Ailelerin karın ağrısı için evde herhangi bir geleneksel uygulama yapma oranı %56.2’dir. En çok uygulanan geleneksel yöntemler sırasıyla masaj, sıcak uygulama, bitki çayları ve soğuk uygulamadır. Sonuç: Ailelerin, karın ağrısı hakkında bilgi ve desteğe ihtiyaçları vardır.

MEU Journal of Health Sciences Assoc was began to the publishing process in 2008 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Gönül Aslan, Editor-in-Chief, and affiliated to Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. In March 2015, Prof. Dr. Caferi Tayyar Şaşmaz undertook the Editor-in Chief position and since then he has been in charge.
Publishing in three issues per year (April - August - December), it is a multisectoral refereed scientific journal. In addition to research articles, scientific articles such as reviews, case reports and letters to the editor are published in the journal. Our journal, which has been published via e-mail since its inception, has been published both online and in print. Following the Participation Agreement signed with TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM Dergi Park in April 2015, it has started to accept and evaluate online publications.
