Aim: Rehospitalizations in mental disorders increase the individual, social, and financial burden of the disorder. In this study, we aimed to determine the rates of rehospitalization of patients with and without psychotic symptoms and to compare sociodemographic and clinical variables. Methods: All patients who admitted to our inpatient psychiatry clinics between 01.07.2013-30.06.2017 were retrospectively included in the study. Patients with and without psychotic symptoms were compared in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables. Patients with recurrent hospitalizations within 18 months of admission included in the study as the group of recurrent hospitalizations; patients with three and above rehospitalizations were included as the group of revolving door phenomena. Patients with recurrent hospitalization and revolving door phenomena were compared with others in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables. Results: The mean age of 903 patients included in the study was 40.02±14.31. According to the DSM-5, the most common diagnoses were the depressive disorders (35.3%), schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (18.2%), bipolar and associated disorders (17.8%). 38.7% of the patients were psychotic, and 61.4% were non-psychotic. 24% of the patients had recurrent hospitalizations, and 6.9% were patients with revolving door phenomena. 22.7% of psychotic patients and 24.8% of non-psychotic patients had recurrent hospitalizations. There were no significant differences in the number of hospitalizations between patients with and without psychotic symptoms (p>0.05). Conclusions: The effect of psychotic symptoms on rehospitalizations could not be demonstrated in our study. Prospective follow-up studies with larger sample sizes, which include other factors that may have an impact on rehospitalizations, will help to clarify this issue.
