Amaç: Bu araştırma huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlı bireylerin yaşam doyumu ve umutsuzluk düzeylerini belirlemek ve etkileyen faktörleri incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipte yapılan bu çalışma Ankara’da beş farklı huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlılarla yürütülmüştür. Örnekleme dahil edilme kriterleri 65 yaş ve üzeri, işitme sorunu olmayan, iletişim kurabilen, psikiyatrik bir hastalığı ve demansı olmayan yaşlı bireyler olarak belirlenmiştir. Örnekleme dahil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan ve çalışmaya katılmaya gönüllü 265 yaşlı birey örnekleme alınmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin toplanmasında yaşlı bireylerin sosyo-demografik özelliklerini içeren tanıtıcı veri formu, yaşam doyumu ölçeği (LSIA-Index) ve Beck Umutsuzluk ölçeği veri toplama ölçekleri olarak kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS 23 paket programında analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde yüzdelik, ortalama, normal dağılan değişkenler tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA), bağımsız gruplarda t testi, normal dağılmayan değişkenler Kruskal Wallis testi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Yaşlı bireylerin yaşam doyumu ölçek puanı ortalaması 9.38±4.51 olarak, Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçek toplam puan ortalaması ise 11.32±3.66 bulunmuştur. Yaş, medeni durum, öğrenim düzeyi, huzurevinde kalma süresi, huzurevinden memnuniyet durumu, geçmişe yönelik keşkeler, geleceğe bakış açısı ile yaşam doyumu ve umutsuzluk düzeyi arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Yaşam doyumu ile umutsuzluk arasında negatif yönde ve orta düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki gözlenmiştir. Sonuç: Huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlı bireylerin yaşam doyumlarının düşük ve umutsuzluk düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Huzurevinde yaşayan yaşlı bireylerin yaşam doyumunu ve umut düzeyinin değerlendirilmesi ve arttırmaya yönelik girişimlerin planlanması ve uygulanması önerilmektedir.

Aim: This study aimed to examine the levels of life satisfaction and hopelessness among nursing home residents. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with elderly people living in five different nursing homes in Ankara. The criteria for inclusion in the sample were 65 years or older, without hearing problems, communicating, without psychiatric illness and dementia, and being willing to participate in the study. 265 elderly individuals who met the inclusion criteria were sampled. In order to collect data, descriptive data form including socio-demographic characteristics of elderly individuals, LSIA-Index and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used as data collection scales. Data were analyzed by SPSS 23 package program. In the evaluation of the data, percentage, mean; normally distributed variables, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent samples t test; and non-normally distributed variables were used Kruskal Wallis test. Results: The average life satisfaction scale score of the elderly was 9.38 ± 4.51, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale total score was 11.32 ± 3.66. There was a significant relationship between age, marital status, education level, length of stay in nursing home, satisfaction with nursing home, past observations, future perspective and life satisfaction and hopelessness level. There was a negative correlation between life satisfaction and hopelessness. Conclusion: Elderly living in nursing homes were found to have low life satisfaction and high hopelessness level. It is recommended to evaluate the life satisfaction and hope level of the nursing home residents and to plan and implement intervention to increase the life satisfaction and hope level.

MEU Journal of Health Sciences Assoc was began to the publishing process in 2008 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Gönül Aslan, Editor-in-Chief, and affiliated to Mersin University Institute of Health Sciences. In March 2015, Prof. Dr. Caferi Tayyar Şaşmaz undertook the Editor-in Chief position and since then he has been in charge.
Publishing in three issues per year (April - August - December), it is a multisectoral refereed scientific journal. In addition to research articles, scientific articles such as reviews, case reports and letters to the editor are published in the journal. Our journal, which has been published via e-mail since its inception, has been published both online and in print. Following the Participation Agreement signed with TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM Dergi Park in April 2015, it has started to accept and evaluate online publications.
