Transmitting a scene on air is a broadcasting practice which has been seen to be done only by television channels because of its high cost until recently. However new communication technologies, like in many fields, reform the live stream. Thus, “ordinary” new media users benefit from it and mobile live streaming applications make live stream for both professional and citizen journalism possible. Images recorded with mobile phones’ cameras especially on instant moment are begun to be transmitted to the audience on air and different journalism experiences occur apart from mainstream media. Even though 2007 applications as Livestream, Ustream have been accepted as the pioneers of the field, since 2015 live streaming applications, which are wieldy, open to interaction, and make live stream possible with mobile phones and social networks, have been occurred and begun to be used more than first period applications by larger mass. Besides applications as Meerkat and Periscope, live broadcasting is also possible via popular social networking sites as YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Some broadcasts of mobile live applications bring a series of discussion with it because of the risks it involves and ethic infringement. On the other hand, when it is discussed in context of journalism, it must be evaluated with its restrictions and problems besides its opportunities. In this descriptive study, opportunities and restrictions of Periscope which is one of the mobile live applications are examined as a news production practice with the examples of journalism activities in the field.
