Elmalılı’s Approach to the Birth of Hz. Isa within the Framework of Miracle and Scientific Understanding
Abstract
Muhammad Hamdi Yazır, one of the scholars of the late Ottoman period, has a distinguished place in religious and human sciences. Elmalılı, a versatile scholar, became one of the leading scholars and intellectuals of his time with this-- knowledge. Elmalılı, who was involved in scientific and political activities in the late Ottoman period, accepted the task of writing a commentary offered to him by the parliament with the establishment of the Republic, under certain conditions, and wrote the work Hak Dini Kur’an Dili. Elmalılı, who was sensitive to the balance of reason and transmission, also included scientific explanations while explaining the verses. It is possible to see this approach in his explanation of miracles. While he argued that miracles cannot be explained by reason, but are a matter that must be believed; on the other hand, his scientific explanation of miracles shows the sagacity of his commentary. Elmalılı, who explained the miracle of Hz. Maryam’s pregnancy with Hz. Isa as a miracle, brought a different perspective to this miracle. This issue, which caused serious debates between Muslims and Christians, was discussed in detail in Elmalılı's commentary. He tried to show that, unlike Christianity, the Quran gave importance to reason and science, and responded to the wrong ideas about Hz. Isa. He emphasized that the irrational interpretations in the Christian belief in the trinity were illogical and that human qualities could not be attributed to Allah. Elmalılı examined the verses of the Quran within the framework of reason and logic, and made scientific inferences from them. Against the idea of god that Christians attributed to the birth of Hz. Isa, he drew attention to the creation of Hz. Adam, the first human and the first prophet, and brought evidence from the Quran to the impasses in Christians' understanding of god. Elmalılı argues that the understanding of god in the Christian belief does not comply with the belief in monotheism in Islam, and that the belief in the trinity, which caused the debate, is baseless and irrational.
