The Application of Riwāyah and Dirāyah in Maʿārıf al-Qurʾān

Abstract

Mufti Muhammad Shafīʿ Deobandī (1897–1976), who left a lasting imprint on the Indian Subcontinent in general and on Pakistan in particular through his scholarly acumen, extensive pedagogical activities, and a wide range of authored works, has been the subject of numerous academic studies. This study examines the life of the exegete best known for his Urdu tafsir, Maʿārıf al-Qurʾān, along with the process of its composition, its sources, and its dimensions of riwāyah (transmission-based exegesis) and dirāyah (analytical reasoning). To this end, an effort is made to maintain objectivity by incorporating, to the extent possible, relevant scholarship produced in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish. Although some studies in Türkiye address the author’s life, the absence of independent academic works specifically devoted to the purpose, content, methodology, and the riwāyah and dirāyah dimensions of Maʿārıf al-Qurʾān renders this research particularly significant. The primary aim of the study is to analyze the relationship the exegete establishes between transmitted reports and rational, interpretive elements, and to determine the place of this approach within the classical tafsir tradition. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study draws primarily on the tafsir text itself, alongside sources produced in scholarly circles in India, Pakistan, and Türkiye, and evaluates them systematically and holistically. The analysis reveals that riwāyah functions as the principal explanatory framework in the tafsir, while dirāyah serves a complementary and interpretive role. This balanced methodological structure has contributed to the acceptance of Maʿārıf al-Qurʾān both within academic circles and among a broader readership, and has further facilitated its dissemination across diverse regions through translations into multiple languages.
