Jafr and abjad from the point of value of knowledge: the metaphysics of letters and numbers

Abstract

This study examines the concepts of jafr and abjad from the point of their value of knowledge. It analysis these concepts as a historical phenomenon based upon allegorical explanations. Such sectarian movements as Ishmailiyyah, Batiniyyah and Ikhwan al-Safa are examined as case matters. The study also discusses whether the explanation of the verses of the Qur’an according to the technique of abjad is appropriate to Islam.
