The Sociology of Islam in a Search for a Method
Abstract
In the recent years, the possibility of Islamic sociology has been discussed frequently as a controversial subject, especially, by the sociologists of religion. Since the emergence of this academic field, a series of problems related to the Islamic sociology have become visible. Probably, the most important one of these is methodological problem for the reason that, if we would want to talk about the existence of a distinctive area and about constituting a sociological practice independent from the historical conditions in the “West”, we, inevitably, need a method. This assumption constitutes the main theme of this article. In this context, firstly, the methodological problem of sociology, which is a product of western historical condition, will be discussed; then, the efforts in solving the methodological problems of Islamic sociology will be examined. In the end of the paper, suggestions for overcoming the aforesaid problem will be also provided.
