TRANSFORMATION IN MUSEUM EDUCATION: TEACHER’S TRAINING IN KOCAELI MUSEUM

Abstract

The basic function of the contemporary museum is education. The contemporary museum seeks the possibilities of educational activities as social functions as well protection, conservation, documentation and storage. During the training process, museums especially go for the planning and implementation in the way which includes different age and interest groups and they make collaboration with specialists through contemporary educational methods like face to face and distance education approaches. Kocaeli Archeology and Ethnography Museum is a dynamic cultural institution which aims to present its rich and diverse collection to different age and interest groups with its innovative methods and techniques. In this study, the process and findings related to the educational activities of Kocaeli Museum professionals within the scope of the “Museum Education Project” which was conducted in cooperation with the East Mediterranean Marmara Development Agency and prepared by Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences Museum Education Programme in 2016 in the context of contemporary museology approach is stated. Within the scope of the museum education project, the collection of the museum was examined and analyzed for different ages and interest groups in the scope of educational activities. Training of museum professionals in accordance to learn how to use museum collection with the purpose of education and construction of children’s education room and education pack were also emphasized
