UTILIZATION OF MUSEUMS AS DISCOVERY AREAS

Abstract

Contemporary museums offer experiences for visitors with their object based educational activities by bearing in mind visitors’ prior knowledge, experience and needs. Thus, they encourage visitors’ subjectivation in the knowledge construction process. Because this subjectivation process is contributed by a social environment containing culture, art, history and science, it affects not only students’ cognitive development but also their affective and social development and promotes their curiosity due to its free-choice nature. It is aimed to encourage students in all these aspects in today’s education system, which is based on constructivist viewpoint. At this point, museum -which is a discovery area where students scrutinise the connection among knowledge, society and themselves and improve their skills- should be a part of our educational system and museum-school collaboration should be supported with all their components. The purpose of this study is to analyze the place of the museum education in the direction of today’s educational needs and theoretical bases of the museum education, also to determine the actions to be taken in order to provide museum-school collaboration
