INVESTIGATION OF MUSEUMS IN ANKARA IN TERMS OF THE EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION
Abstract
In 2007, International Council of Museums (ICOM) had updated the definition
of museum as a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society
and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches,
communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and
its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment. In this regard,
it is also significant that museum has been shifting from only conservation
an exhibition of items toward communication with audience through active
engagement and education. With perceiving the museums as an environment
for education, the terms of education in museums, museum environment, and
museum educator have begun to use. Considering this shift, the present study
focuses on museums in Ankara of which museums have been using their context
for education. In the scope of the study, five museums in Ankara had been selected
using purposeful sampling. To collect data from museums, semi-structured
interview form and document analysis forms were developed. In the forms, the
data were gathered under five titles: Museum Educator, Education/Program/
Activites, Sevice and Publicity, Cooperation and Support, and also Space. The
result of the study showed that all museums have museum educators, two of
whom have museum pedagogy background. Educators stated that they had felt
more competent in the fields of museum and museum education; and also they
had been planning and evaluating activites for the children from preschool to
aged 17. Additionally, the study revealed that all museum are open for cooperation
with experts and except for one museum, all have seperate and appropriate
room for the education.
