THE COMPARISON OF COURSE HEFTTS IN TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS
Abstract
The aim of the study is to compare the ration of the courses in teacher training programs from past to present. In parallel with the study, from “Darulmuallimin” – a kind of school training teachers in Ottoman age – to teaching schools, from Village Institutes to primary teaching schools, from educational institutes to educational faculties the process is an indicator of the tradition of teacher training in our country. Therefore, it is needed to convert experience and knowledge to policy of training ideal teachers. However, frequent change of the models, the new comers’ ignorance of predecessors, and inability to convert the changes into practice lead us to conclude that we don’t have a teacher training model special to Turkey. In the study, we used document analysis as a qualitative research method. We compared the ration of the courses in teacher training programs according to frequency, mean, and percentage distributions. In this scope, we compared the rations of the courses in the programs of education high schools, institute of education, village institutes, teaching schools, art teacher high school for girls, art teacher high school for boys, technical teacher high school, trade and tourism teacher high school, technical teacher high school for girls, Educational Institute of Gazi, teaching high school, and faculty of education. The programs of teacher training faculties were conducted via teaching knowledge, special field and general knowledge courses. Besides the average distribution of the courses differs according to the programs, it contains 50-60% field knowledge, 25-30% teaching knowledge and 15-20% general knowledge. The findings of the study may contribute to educational policy-makers’ and the teacher training institutes’ efforts about developing teacher training program special to Turkish educational system
