A RESEARCH ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF A TARGET VOCABULARY FOR THE THIRD GRADE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract
In this research, advisory activities on the improvements of the third grade primary school students on vocabulary are prepared and practised within the scope of action research. The basic purpose of the research is to identify the vocabulary components primarily used by the third grade primary students in written expressions. To determine what kind of changes can arise from the activities appropriately developed for the vocabulary learning strategies on the usage of the existing vocabulary of the students. In line with this purpose, 10 activities have been developed by using of the strategies for learning lexical meaning and all of these activities are included into the lesson plans. Likewise, work forms are prepared for each of the activities and The Vocabulary Improvement Book, able to guide to the research, is composed and united to the lesson plans and has been applied to the students for ten weeks. From the beginning to the end of the research, it has been observed that the students have used 5579 equivalent for 4535 words; 51 equivalent reiteratives for 6 reiteratives; 77 equivalent idioms for 16 idioms in their written expressions. And what is more, it has been observed that the students have preferred using the 23 of the targeted vocabulary, 5 of reiteratives, 4 of idioms all of which they have learned recently, by putting into their generative vocabulary in their latest composition practices
