FREQUENCY AND EXTENSIVENESS OF WORDS IN TURKISH TEXTBOOKS FOR FOREIGNERS
Abstract
Words help grammar rules gain meaning and learners communicate with others. When it comes to words in foreign language teaching, questions like “What to teach, how much to teach and when to teach?” are always asked. Researchers suggest that the most frequent and extensive words of languages should be taught first. In this regard, the research question of this study is “What is the word frequency and extensiveness in Turkish textbooks for foreigners?” Therefore, this study aims to determine the word frequency and extensiveness in Turkish textbooks. For this purpose, words of 15 Turkish textbooks for foreigners (A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels from Gazi, Yeni Hitit and İstanbul) was reviewed by using survey method and (quantitative) descriptive analysis was applied to analyze word frequency and extensiveness. It was revealed that the Turkish textbooks did not have a common understanding of which words to teach
