A STUDY ON ATTITUDE AND HABIT OF USING DICTIONARY BY STUDENTS WHO LEARN TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

Today, changes in political and social structures, technological developments and increase in the possibilities to get education in other countries make learning a second language as much easy as indispensable. In order to achieve a successful language education, it is necessary to make use of visual, auditory and written materials. Dictionary is one of these materials, providing us with the word treasury of a language both in written and speaking forms, displaying semantic relationship which words establish with other elements. Dictionaries, which are often consulted by the students who want to learn Turkish as a second language, play an important role in language teaching. This article intends to demonstrate the state of dictionary usage by foreign students while they learn Turkish. The study, which uses the screening method, analyses the attitudes of 110 students who study at Gazi University, TÖMER (Turkish Language, Research and Application Center) towards dictionary use, their frequency of using a dictionary, preferred dictionary types and habit of using dictionary, taking into account different variables. Researcher developed a “Dictionary Use Attitude Scale” by using “Personal Information and Dictionary Use Variables”. For the analysis of the data, SPSS 22 statistics package program, and ANOVA (one way analysis of variance) are utilized. In order to test the meaningfulness of relationship between two variables, t-test is used, while tukey test is employed for measuring the degree of meaningfulness between more than two variables
