THE PREDICTIVE EFFECT OF PRESCHOOL PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON PARENT ATTITUDES

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the predictive effect of preschool parental involvement on parent attitudes. This study was based on a relational screening model. The study sample comprised 250 parents of children attending pre-school education institutions in the provincial center of Uşak. Data collection tools used during the study included the Parental Involvement Scale developed by Fantuzzo, Tighe and Childs, and adapted to Turkish by Gürşimşek (2003); and the Parent Attitude Scale developed by Karabulut Demir and Şendil (2008). Based on the study results, the home-based parental involvement variable was identified as a positive predictor of democratic attitudes among parents, and a negative and significant predictor of authoritarian attitudes among parents. The other sub-dimensions of parent involvement were not identified as significant predictors of overprotective and permissive parent attitudes.
