INFLUENCE OF HISTOGRAPHY ON HISTORY EDUCATION IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

Abstract

Historiography has influence on history education and the types of historiography have also influence on history education in terms of ideology, content and teaching methods. There are three different type of historiographies in the Ottoman Empire which are religious, dynasty and nationalist. The history of Islam had been given attention during the religious historiography period and creating an Ottoman identity by history education was the key aim of dynasty historiography view. Besides this, history education was under the influence of Turkism in the period of nationalist historiography period. The purpose of this paper is to examine to what extent the types of historiographies which are religious, dynasty and nationalist influenced on history education during the Ottoman Empire. With this in mind, the influence of historiographies on history education will be explained in terms of ideology, content and teaching methods.
