MAP LITERACY SKILL IN THE CURRICULA OF SOCIAL STUDIES (1924-2005) AND TEXTBOOKS (2005-2010)

Abstract

Maps are one of the most important tools used in the processing of the subjects in social studies. Maps are tools assisting in the explanation of almost all subjects in social studies. In this study, we searched for how map literacy was included in the curricula of social studies in the Republic of Turkey (1924-2005), and in the social studies textbooks used between 2005-2010. Study results demonstrated that there were no detailed explanations as to map literacy in social studies curricula and how the information intended to be transmitted through maps will be obtained, maps were not given in textbooks according to the curricula, and students’ cognitive levels and principles of map drawing, and there were no models and approaches on this subject. Recommendations were included based on the results found at the end of the study.
