EFFECTIVENESS OF AN IN-SERVICE TRAINING COURSE: TEACHING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES

Abstract

Rapid increase in knowledge production makes societies to invest in developing teachers’ professional abilities through in-service training activities. In this study, it aimed to evaluate of effectiveness of an In-Service Training (INSET) course on Teaching Methods and Techniques. At the beginning of the INSET a needs assessment carried out and content of the course is determined. On the basis of this analysis, during the course practical activities carried out with teachers on expected methods and techniques. Already known teaching methods were introduced through demonstration method within the INSET activity. At the end of the course, it is observed that teachers developed their skills and knowledge on teaching methods which they expected to learn and participated in better. However no meaningful results were obtained about development on other teaching methods. Development of teachers can be related to the analysis of needs assessment made before the course and hands on and practical learning method applied during the course. In order to increase the quality of INSET courses, they should be designed in more practical structure. Therefore, development of practical infrastructure of the courses should be done through the needs assessment processes before such courses.

Abstract

Bilgi üretimindeki baş döndürücü artış nedeniyle toplumlar, değişimsürecindeki ihtiyaçlarının karşılanmasında özelde öğretmenlerin mesleki gelişimlerinin hizmet içi eğitim faaliyetleri ile desteklenmesi için önemli yatırımlaryapmaktadırlar. Bu araştırmada, “Öğretim Yöntem ve Teknikleri” konulu birhizmet içi kursun etkililiğinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlamıştır. Kursun başlangıcında ihtiyaç analizi yapılarak içerik belirlenmiştir. Buna göre, ihtiyaç duyulan yöntem ve tekniklerde öğretmenlerle uygulamalı etkinlikler yürütülmüştür.Bilindiği varsayılan yöntemler ise öğretmenlere gösteri yöntemi ile tanıtılmıştır.Kurs sonunda öğretmenlerin özellikle öğrenmek istedikleri ve katıldıkları etkinliklerdeki yöntemleri kurs öncesine göre geliştirdikleri, diğer konularda iseanlamlı bir gelişme gösteremedikleri gözlenmiştir. Kurs öncesine göre öğretmenlerdeki gelişme, kursun ihtiyaç analizi ve yaparak yaşarak öğrenme yapısıile ilişkilendirilebilir. Hizmet içi öğretmen eğitiminde kalitenin yükseltilmesi,mümkün olabildiğince kursların uygulamalı bir yapıya dönüştürülmesiylemümkündür. Bundan dolayı, kurslarda etkililiğin en üst düzeye çıkartılmasıihtiyaç analizi ile uygulama konusundaki alt yapıların iyileştirilmesi gerekmektedir
