Mezunlar Anlatıyor: Üniversite Geneli Seçmeli Dersler Zaman Kaybı mı Yoksa Geleceğe Yatırım mı?

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, üniversite geneli seçmeli dersler uygulamasının üniversite mezunlarının görüşlerine göre incelenmesidir. Araştırmada, mezunların üniversite geneli seçmeli derslere ilişkin görüşleri ve bunlardaki değişimler; bu dersleri almadan önce, alırken ve mezuniyet sonrasında olmak üzere üç farklı zaman dilimi temel alınarak incelenmiştir. Ayrıca mezunların üniversite geneli seçmeli derslere (ÜGSD) ilişkin genel görüşleri ve önerileri belirlenmiştir. Araştırma, nitel araştırmaların bütüncül tek durum desenine uygundur. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, bir devlet üniversitesinin mezunları arasından amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden olan kartopu (zincirleme) yönteminin ilkelerine uygun olarak belirlenen 35 mezun oluşturmaktadır. Görüşmeler yoluyla elde edilen veriler, içerik analizi yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre mezunlar, ÜGSD’ye ilişkin ders öncesi/süreci ve mezuniyet sonrasında mutluluk, memnuniyet gibi olumlu duygular ile bireysel/çok yönlü gelişimlerine katkı sağladığı ve etkili olduğuna ilişkin olumlu düşüncelere sahiptir. Mezunların ÜGSD’ye ilişkin az sayıdaki olumsuz düşüncelerinin daha çok ders sürecinde ve derslerin etkisiz/sıradan olmasına ilişkin açıklandığı görülmüştür. Mezunların ÜGSD’ye ilişkin olumlu duygu/düşünceleri ders öncesi/süreci ve mezuniyet sonrasında sürekli artış gösterirken; olumsuz duygu/düşüncelerinin ders sürecinde arttığı mezuniyet sonrasında ise nispeten azaldığı belirlenmiştir. Mezunlar, genel olarak ÜGSD’nin çok yönlü gelişimlerine katkı sağladığını düşünmekte ve yaygınlaşmasını, ders sayısının fazlalaşmasını, ders seçimine ilişkin yönlendirmenin olmasını önermektedir. Araştırma sonuçlarına dayalı olarak lisans eğitim programlarına üniversite geneli seçmeli dersleri dâhil eden/etmek isteyen üniversitelere ve araştırmacılara yönelik bazı öneriler sunulmuştur.

The Alumni Voice: Are University-Wide Elective Courses a Waste of Time or an Investment for the Future?

Abstract

This study aims to examine the application of university-wide elective courses (UWECs) based on the views of the alumni. In the study, the alumni views about UWECs and their changes have been revealed by examining them in three different periods, namely before, while taking these courses and after graduation. In addition, their general views/ suggestions regarding UWECs have been determined. This qualitative study is designed based on single case study design. The study group includes 35 graduates selected from among the graduates of a state university via the snowball method. The data obtained through the interviews have been analysed via content analysis. Based on the findings, the alumni have such positive views that they contribute to their individual / multi-directional development and are effective, and such positive feelings as happiness and satisfaction about the UWECs before / during the courses and after graduation. A few negative views of the alumni about the UWECs are mostly explained during the courses and about their ineffectiveness. Their positive feelings / views have been constantly increased before/during the courses and after graduation while their negative feelings / views have increased during the courses and decreased relatively after graduation. The alumni generally think UWECs contribute to their multi-dimensional development and advise they become widespread, the number of courses be increased, and there be guidance regarding course selection. Based on the results of the study, some suggestions are offered to researchers and universities which have included UWECs in their curricula / are eager to include them.
