Pragmatist Rhetoric Against Manipulation and Propaganda: A Shift from Sophistry to Aristotelian Ethical Orientation

Abstract

The conditions created by contemporary communication technologies have significantly increased the influence of propaganda, disinformation, and manipulative practices in social and political spheres. This situation has brought to the forefront the need to reconsider and re-evaluate the democratic function of rhetoric. This study comparatively examines the sophistic and pragmatist variations of rhetoric from the perspective of their respective understandings of knowledge and discusses the possibilities of democratic resistance offered by pragmatist rhetoric in response to propaganda and manipulation. Drawing on the works of pragmatist thinkers such as Schiller, Dewey, Rorty, and Mailloux, the study seeks to reveal the purposive differences between pragmatist and sophistic rhetoric through comparative philosophical analysis and qualitative- interpretive methods. The research emphasizes that although pragmatist rhetoric methodologically follows a line similar to the anti-foundationalist and anti-essentialist orientation of the sophistic tradition, it displays an Aristotelian-Platonic inclination in terms of ethical and humanistic orientation. The study argues that while pragmatist rhetoric does not rest on claims to absolute or universal truth, it is nevertheless shaped by social practice and human life experience. Accordingly, the study maintains that pragmatist rhetoric, when positioned as an indispensable component of public debate, has the capacity to provide a basis for democratic resistance to propaganda and manipulation grounded in ethical sensitivity and public reasoning.

Manipülasyon ve Propaganda Karşısında Pragmatist Retorik: Sofizmden Aristotelesçi Etik Amacına Geçiş

Abstract

Çağdaş iletişim imkanlarının beraberinde getirdiği koşullar propaganda, dezenformasyon ve manipülatif faaliyetlerin etkisini toplumsal ve siyasal alanlarda ciddi bir şekilde artırmıştır. Bu mesele retoriğin demokratik işlevinin yeniden tartışılması ve değerlendirilmesi gerektiğini gündeme getirmiştir. Bu çalışma, retoriğin sofistik ve pragmatist varyasyonlarını bilgi anlayışı açısından karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemekte ve pragmatist retoriğin propaganda ve manipülasyon karşısında sunduğu demokratik direnç imkânlarını tartışmaktadır. Çalışma, Schiller, Dewey, Rorty ve Mailloux gibi pragmatist düşünürlerin metinlerine dayanarak, karşılaştırmalı felsefe analiz, nitel ve yorumlayıcı bir yöntemle, pragmatist retoriğin sofistik retorikten amaçsal farklarını ortaya koymaya çalışmaktadır. Araştırma, pragmatist retoriğin yöntemsel açıdan sofistik geleneğin anti-temelci ve anti-özcü yaklaşımıyla benzer bir çizgiyi takip etmesine rağmen etik ve hümanist yönelim açıdan Aristotelesçi-Platoncu bir izlenime sahip olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Çalışma pragmatist retoriğin mutlak ve evrensel bir hakikat iddiası taşımamasına rağmen, toplumsal pratik ve insan deneyimi içinde şekillenen bir yaklaşım olduğunu belirtmektedir. Böylelikle çalışma, kamusal tartışmanın vazgeçilmez bir unsuru olarak konumlanan pragmatist retoriğin propaganda ve manipülasyona karşı etik duyarlılık ve kamusal muhakeme temelli bir demokratik direnç zemini sunma kabiliyetine sahip olduğunu savunmaktadır.
