Do Developments in the Agricultural Sector Affect Environmental Pollution? Empirical Findings on Turkey

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between developments in the agricultural sector and environmental pollution. For this purpose, in addition to agricultural value added and CO2 variables, economic growth, renewable energy consumption and trade openness variables were also included in the analysis. Annual data for the 1990-2018 sample period of the said variables in the Turkish economy were used. In the study, Pesaran et al. (2001) Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds test method was used. Empirical findings have shown the existence of a cointegration relationship between these variables. ARDL coefficient estimation results; revealed that all variables in the model are statistically significant in the long run. While it is seen that economic growth, agricultural added value and trade liberalization increase CO2 emissions in the long term; It has been concluded that renewable energy consumption reduces CO2 emissions. The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, which shows the existence of an inverted-U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution, is valid in the long run; however, it is seen that the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis is not valid in the short term.

Tarım Sektöründeki Gelişmeler Çevresel Kirliliği Etkiliyor mu? Türkiye Üzerine Ampirik Bulgular

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın temel amacı tarım sektöründeki gelişmeler ile çevre kirliliği ilişkisini araştırmaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda tarımsal katma değer ve CO2 değişkenlerinin yanı sıra ekonomik büyüme, yenilenebilir enerji tüketimi ve ticari açıklık oranı değişkenleri de analize dahil edilmiştir. Türkiye ekonomisinde söz konusu değişkenlere ait 1990-2018 örneklem dönemine ait yıllık veriler kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada Pesaran vd. (2001) tarafından geliştirilen Gecikmesi Dağıtılmış Otoregresif (ARDL) sınır testi yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Ampirik bulgular söz konusu değişkenler arasında eşbütünleşme ilişkisinin varlığını göstermiştir. ARDL katsayı tahmin sonuçları; uzun dönemde modeldeki tüm değişkenlerin istatistiki olarak anlamlı olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Uzun dönemde ekonomik büyümenin, tarımsal katma değerin ve ticari serbestleşmenin CO2 emisyonunu artırdığı görülmekte iken; yenilenebilir enerji tüketiminin ise CO2 emisyonunu azalttığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ekonomik büyüme ve çevre kirliği arasındaki ters-U şeklindeki ilişkinin varlığını gösteren Çevresel Kuznets Eğrisi hipotezinin uzun dönemde geçerli olduğu; ancak kısa dönemde Çevresel Kuznets Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerli olmadığı görülmektedir.
