Democracy and Education in the Permanentist Mortimer Adler

Abstract

Mortimer Adler is one of the essential thinkers of the twentieth century due to his work on philosophy and education. He is one of the representatives of the Perennialist philosophy of education, which emphasizes that education should be shaped according to unchanging and universal principles. Within the framework of the perennial understanding, he has important criticisms against progressive education. According to Adler, the progressive understanding infantilized and even infantilized people in education as a result of the child-centered education idea it advocated. According to Adler, who criticizes progressivist education, education should encourage people to do things by pursuing knowledge and wisdom. For such an ideal education, he places the concepts of democracy, freedom, and the mind at the center. In education, the student should be introduced to democratic theory and made to examine democracy in the light of reason and universal principles. Indeed, only when the individual surrenders to the authority of reason can be free and find democracy. The existence of a curriculum that is compatible with universal principles is essential for the acquisition of democracy. Within the framework of the desired curriculum, the three learning models of indoctrination, discovery learning, and cooperative learning should support each other for democratic, immutable, and universal education. In such a learning situation, the three teaching modes of seminar, coaching, and didactic teaching should be used in education. In this context, the present study was conducted to examine and analyze Adler's thoughts on Democracy, Education, and the elements he considered necessary for democratic education. In the research, Adler's views on democracy and education, his ideas and criticisms of the progressive understanding of education, the place of teacher, student, and curriculum for ideal democratic education, the implementation of the three teaching models of seminar, coaching, and didactic teaching are discussed.

Daimici Mortimer Adler’de Demokrasi ve Eğitim

Abstract

Mortimer Adler, felsefe ve eğitime yönelik yapmış olduğu çalışmalardan dolayı yirminci yüzyılın önemli düşünürleri arasında yer almaktadır. Eğitimin, değişmez ve evrensel önemli ilkelere göre şekillendirilmesi gerektiğini vurgulayan Daimici eğitim felsefesinin önemli temsilcilerinden biridir. Daimici anlayış çerçevesinde ilerlemeci eğitime yönelik önemli eleştirileri bulunmaktadır. Nitekim Adler’e göre ilerlemeci anlayış, savunduğu çocuk merkezli eğitim düşüncesi sonucunda eğitimde insanları çocuksulaştırmış hatta bebeksileştirmiştir. İlerlemeci eğitimi eleştiren Adler göre eğitim, insanları mümkün oldukça zor yollardan, bilgi ve bilgeliğin peşinde koşarak bir şeyler yapmaya teşvik etmelidir. Böylesi ideal bir eğitim için demokrasi, özgürlük ve zihin kavramlarını temele yerleştirir. Eğitimde öğrenci demokratik teoriyle tanıştırılmalı ayrıca aklın ve evrensel ilkelerin ışığında demokrasiyi incelemesi sağlatılmalıdır. Nitekim birey ancak aklın otoritesine teslim olduğunda gerçekten özgür olabilir ve demokrasiyi bulabilir. Demokrasinin kazandırılması noktasında da evrensel ilkelerle uyumlu bir müfredatın varlığı önemlidir. Arzu edilen müfredat çerçevesinde demokratik, değişmez ve evrensel nitelikteki eğitim için üç öğrenme modeli olan telkin etme, keşif yoluyla öğrenme ve işbirlikçi öğrenme birbirini destekler nitelikte yer almalıdır. Böylesi bir öğrenme durumu içinde üç öğretme şekli olan seminer, koçluk ve didaktik öğretim eğitimde kullanılmalıdır. Bu bağlamda mevcut çalışma, Adler’in “Demokrasi ve Eğitim” hakkındaki düşüncelerini ve demokratik eğitim için gerekli gördüğü öğeleri incelemek ve analiz etmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmada, Adler’in; demokrasi ve eğitimle ilgili görüşleri, ilerlemeci eğitim anlayışına yönelik fikirleri ve eleştirileri, ideal demokratik eğitim için öğretmen, öğrenci ve müfredatın yeri, üç öğretme modeli olan seminer, koçluk ve didaktik öğretimin uygulanış şekli ele alınmıştır.
