Analysis of Petition Writing Skills of the First Graders at the Faculty of Education
Abstract
The study aiming to analyse petition writing skills of the first graders at the faculty of education was carried out with 165 first graders studying at Turkish Language, English Language, Science, Art and Crafts, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Computer and Instructional Technologies Education departments of Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Education. The study was in survey model, and the data were analyzed through document review among qualitative research methods and techniques. The petitions of the students were analyzed using Petition Writing Rubric developed by Özçakmak (2017). Basic findings of the study were as follows: It was concluded that mean petition writing score of the students was 13,41 and this was proportionately 67%. It was also revealed that the students made mistakes mainly in writing date and expressing their problems while they made mistakes at the least in writing address and contact information and use of language. On the other hand, it was found that petition writing scores of the students were statistically significant with respect to department variable (x2=29,606; sd=6; p<.05). The most successful departments in writing petition were Turkish Language Teaching and Education of Mentally Handicapped whereas the least successful departments were Computer and Instructional Technologies Education and Painting and Crafts Education. Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference between the scores regarding gender variable (U= 2357,500; z= -1,952; p=.051). Finally, there was not statistically significant difference between formal scores and language and expression scores of the students (Z=-1,301; p>.05).
