Academic writing is a genre of writing that students and academicians often use in higher education. It also differs, with many charecterictics, from using of social language as it is different from language’s literal, esthetic usage or the usage we can call as a fiction. Thousands of students, coming from different countries to our country, need to learn Turkish on the level of using while they study for academic education. In this regard, that the development of their academic writing ability is important for foreign students. In this study, foreign students’ need of academic writing is tried to be shown. In this study, supported as a case study that is one of the qualitative researches, a focus group discussion with 22 foreign students is made, written expression of these students is studied. It is interviewed with three instructor lecturing in TÖMER and three academic members lectured to foreign students in academic education and students’ need of academic writing is tried to be shown. The fact that students’ problems of not being able to use qualified title, academic words, problems of word writing, not being able to form inverted sentence, academic sentence, planning, not being able to organize paragraph form. Academic members and TÖMER lecturers state that especially the course of academic writing is a necessity for the foreign students in the first years of university
Özet
Akademik yazma yükseköğretim kurumlarında öğrencilerin ve akademisyenlerin çok sık kullandıkları bir yazma çeşididir. Dilin, edebî, estetik veya kurmaca diyebileceğimiz kullanımlarından farklı olduğu gibi gündelik dil kullanımlarından da birçok özelliği ile ayrılmaktadır. Ülkemize farklı ülkelerden gelen binlerce öğrenci, yükseköğrenimlerini gerçekleştirirken kullanacakları bir düzeyde Türkçe öğrenmeleri gerekir. Bu bakımdan akademik yazma becerilerinin geliştirilmesi yabancı uyruklu öğrenciler için önemlidir. Bu çalışmada yabancı uyruklu öğrencilerin akademik yazma ihtiyaçları ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması olarak desenlenen bu araştırmada yabancı uyruklu 22 öğrenci ile odak grup görüşmeleri yapılmış, bu öğrencilerin yazılı anlatımları incelenmiştir. TÖMER'de derse giren üç okutman ve yükseköğrenimlerde yabancı uyruklu öğrencilere ders vermiş üç öğretim üyesi ile görüşülmüş ve öğrencilerin akademik yazma ihtiyaçları ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Öğrencilerin nitelikli başlık ve akademik kelime kullanamama, kelime yazım sorunları, devrik cümle, akademik cümle kuramama, planlama, paragraf yapılarını organize edememe sorunlarının olduğu ortaya konulmuştur. Öğretim üyeleri ve TÖMER okutmanları, yabancı uyruklu öğrencilerin üniversitelerin ilk yılında bu öğrenciler için özellikle akademik yazma dersinin bir gereklilik olduğunu belirtmişlerdir.
