Comparison of some adaptation characteristics of different sheep breeds under Eastern Mediterranean region conditions

Abstract

Aims: This study was carried out to determine the adaptation characteristics of Kıvırcık, Konya Merino and Awassi lambs in the Amik Plain conditions and to determine the suitability of Kıvırcık and Konya Merino sheep in the region conditions.


Methods and Results: The animal material of the study consisted of 7 head, male and single lambs from each breed. Lambs were fed with lamb fattening feed (80%) and alfalfa grass (20%). The study was conducted between May and July. During the trial, respiratory rate, pulse rate and rectal temperature values were determined as the adaptation parameters. For this purpose, determinations of these values were done at two hours a week (Tuesday-Friday), 08.00, 12.00 and 17.00.


Conclusions: At the end of the study, it was stated that the number of respiration, pulse rate and rectal temperature of the lambs changed during the day.


Significance and Impact of the Study: Kıvırcık and Konya Merino lambs could be fattened under Amik plain conditions without any difficulty in adaptation mechanisms.
