Modified atmosphere packaging and cold storage of ‘Hicaznar’ and ‘Katırbaşı’ pomegranate varieties grown in Hatay
Abstract
Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of modified atmosphere and cold storage on the quality of ‘Hicaznar’ and ‘Katırbaşı’ pomegranate varieties grown in Hatay.
Methods and Results: ‘Hicaznar’ and ‘Katırbaşı’ pomegranate varieties grown in Hatay were used as material in the study. Fruits were stored at 6±0.5 ºC temperature and %90±5 relative humidity for 6 months in cold storage after packaged in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) condition and were analyzed every month. In addition, pomegranates were kept at 20 ºC temperature and 75±5% relative humidity for 7 days and were analyzed to assess their shelf life. Differences in weight loss, total soluble solid content, acid content, fruit juice pH, fruit skin and aril color, O2 and CO2 concentrations in the bag, incidence of physiological disorders and fungal decay, appearance and taste were determined for the fruit samples.
Conclusions: According to the findings, the fruits of the ‘Hicaznar’ pomegranate varieties were successfully stored for 4 months while the fruits of the ‘Katırbaşı’ pomegranate variety for 3 months in MAP conditions at 6 °C and 90% relative humidity.
Significance and Impact of the Study: It is expected that the results of this study determining the storage times of ‘Hicaznar’ and ‘Katırbaşı’ pomegranates in cold conditions had the potential to contribute to the relevant sector, growing region and literature.
