Analyzing the Interplay of Food, Society, and Politics in Antakya Pre- and Post-Earthquake

Abstract

Publications that elucidate the multifaceted role of food beyond mere sustenance, highlighting its significant influence in comprehending our social, political, and economic environment, have gained momentum under the realm of "culinary studies" over the past decade in Turkey and since the 1980s in the world. Presently, we are witnessing the emergence of sociological, political, and economic examinations of food as subjects of academic discourse and research in sociology and political science departments, alongside courses that frequently establish connections between food and culture in gastronomy departments both nationally and internationally. Moreover, apart from this academic and popular interest, food manifests itself as a practical solution within social life, particularly during times of crisis. In addition to reviewing relevant literature that unveils the various dimensions of the food relationship, this article also engenders a discussion on the impacts of the 6th and 20th February Earthquakes on Antakya and its culinary culture.

Yemek, Toplum ve Siyaset İlişkisinin Deprem Öncesi ve Sonrası Antakya Üzerine Düşündürdükleri

Abstract

Yemeğin yemek olma ötesinde özellikler taşıdığını, yaşadığımız çevreyi sosyal, politik ve ekonomik olarak anlamlandırmada çok önemli bir araç olduğunu anlatan yayınlar, dünyada 1980’lerden beri Türkiye'de son 10 yıldır gittikçe artan bir hızla “yemek çalışmaları” alanı altında kümeleniyor. Bugün dünyada ve Türkiye'deki gastronomi bölümlerinde yemek ve kültür bağlantısını sıkça kuran derslerle beraber sosyoloji ve siyaset bilimi bölümlerinde de yemeğin sosyolojik, siyasal ve ekonomik yansımalarının akademik tartışma ve araştırma konusu olduğuna şahit oluyoruz. Bu akademik ve popüler ilginin yanı sıra yemek özellikle kriz zamanlarında çözüm aracı olma özelliğiyle de toplumsal hayatta kendini gösteriyor. Bu makale yemekle ilgili kurulan ilişkinin boyutlarını ortaya koyan bir literatür taramasının yanında, 11 ili etki altına alan 6 ve 20 Şubat Depremlerinin Antakya ve Antakya mutfak kültürü üzerine düşündürdüklerini tartışmaya açmaktadır.
