A manic episode induced by herbal preparate golden berry (cape gooseberry) (Physalis peruviana L.)

Abstract

Herbal preparationsare widely used especially in treatment of cancer, losing weight, analgesia, or for other health problems in folk medicine. In psychiatric disorders they are used especially for insomnia, anxiety, depression, and sexual disorders. The research investigating the efficacy and side effects of these preparations has arrived atdifferent conclusions, also pharmacological mechanisms of these agents and their drug interactions are not very well unknown. Here we report a patient, who applied to our emergency service for concurrent manic symptoms with history of using “golden berry” to lose weight. The patient had a history of depressive episode five years ago, but no manic or hypomanic episodes in the past.

Altın çilek (Physalis peruviana L.) bitkisel preparatının indüklediği manik atak olgusu

Öz

Bitkisel preparatların farklı kültürlerde başta kanser tedavisi, kilo verme, ağrı kesici olmak üzere birçok alanda yaygın kullanımları mevcuttur. Psikiyatride ise özellikle kaygı giderici, uykusuzluk, depresyon ve cinsel işlev bozukluklarını tedavisinde kullanılmaktadır. Bu ajanların gerek etki mekanizmaları gerekse de yan etki açısından yapılan çalışmalarda farklı sonuçlar bulunmuştur ancak herbir molekülün içeriği, farmakolojik etki mekanizması tam olarak bilinmemektedir. Olgumuz daha öncesinde bir kere depresif dönem geçiren ve takip eden süreçte herhangi bir psikiyatrik yakınması yokken zayıflamak maksatlı altın çilek preparatını kullandıktan sonra manik hecme geçiren bir olgudur. Aşağıda bu hastanın sunumu ve tedavi yanıtı ele alınmıştır.
