A Portrait in Turkey's Industrial Memory of Steel: Prof. Celalettin Sencer İmer
Abstract
This study examines the iron and steel industry through intellectual heritage, labor practices, and industrial memory. The underlying assumption is that certain figures leave lasting marks on collective memory and their influence gets absorbed into workplace culture and institutional knowledge. The study focuses on the life, ideas, and academic contributions of Prof. Celalettin Sencer İmer in relation to the iron and steel sector. The research began when the author learned that Prof. İmer had once intended to work on a topic similar to the author’s dissertation but was unable to complete it. This unexpected connection added a personal dimension of loyalty and remembrance. The research situates Prof. İmer's ideas within Turkey's iron and steel experience and traces how policy approaches evolved. His views were reconstructed using texts gathered through academic databases and online search engines. The analysis reveals three recurring themes. He treated the iron and steel sector as a strategic arena tied to global power struggles. He emphasized national interest and strategic autonomy. He also focused on planning mechanisms, institutional strength, and technical logic. The study highlights Prof. İmer as a locally based expert with hands on industry knowledge. He was one of the rare figures who preserved institutional memory in Turkey's iron and steel sector and represents intellectual continuity in the field.
