Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation: Homophobia among Intern Physicians

Abstract

Introduction: Sexual orientation refers to the ongoing emotional, romantic and sexual attraction, desire and orientation towards a person of a certain sex. Homophobia is defined as negative feelings, attitudes and/or behaviors towards gay people. The approach of physicians to homosexual individuals while practicing their profession is important in terms of ensuring that homosexuals do not have problems in receiving health care services. Material and Methods: It is a cross-sectional study. The last year students of Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine formed the universe of the research. It is aimed to reach all senior students in the 2017-2018 period. It was carried out by face-to-face interview technique. The questionnaire consists of two parts, the demographic information form and the Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale. The data were evaluated in the SPSS program, p≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: 94.2% of the students (306 people) were reached. Of the participants, 296 people described their sexual preference (96.7%) as heterosexual. The mean homophobia score was found to be 99.7±30.5. The proportions of the participants who stated that they met a gay person and had a homosexual friend were 32.0% and 10.8%, respectively, and 28.1% of them support legally granting marriage permission to homosexuals. Moreover, homophobia scores of these groups were found to be lower, with median values of 88.5, 68, 7, respectively. is Homophobia scores were found to be higher in males and those with lower educational levels from their parents. Conclusion: Homophobia scores were higher in males and those with lower parental education levels. By carrying out studies to reduce homophobia in these groups and adding special topics related to these groups to the education curriculum, the problems that may be caused by homophobic attitudes and behaviors can be prevented if they encounter homosexual individuals while performing their profession by gaining sensitivity before graduation.
