Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the sociodemographic characteristics, workingreasons and work life characteristics of the apprentices who are educating two professional education centers PEC in Ankara city. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in June 2002 in two PEC Ostim and Ahi Evran. 1.434 of 2.575 apprenticeship students wereeligible 55.7% . In the study a three part questionnaire form was fulfilled by the students by “under observation technique”. In the first part of thequestionnaire there were descriptive questions, inthe second and third parts there were respectivelyquestions about family and characteristics aboutthe occupation.The data collection phase wasconducted by the residents and sixth Class students of Gazi University Medical Faculty PublicHealth Department The data were analyzed in Epi Info Version 6.0 statistical program. The desire of working and status of liking the job of the students were evaluated by chi square test. Results: 58.5% of the subjects were educating in Ahi Evran and 41.5 % in Ostim PEC. The median age of starting to work life of the apprentices was 14.0 7-18 . 54.6 of the subjects were working for learning any profession, 23.3 % for supporting their families. When observing the status of liking his job with regard to desire to work; there was a statistically significant difference between the apprentices who work because “their families wanted”, who work “because he wanted himself” and who work because of the two reasons. The median duration of working daily was 12 hours. 77.0 % of the subjects were giving their income to their families, 77.3 % was not doing paid vacation. 63.3 % of the apprentices were not been examined by a physician before starting the job and 81.4 % in last year unless any illness. 48.2 % had at least one occupational accident in their work life. Conclusion: In this study it was determined that an important part of the apprentices were working to support their families, were not using their right of paid vacation, median duration of daily work was 12 hours and they were not examined by a physician before starting and during their last job.
