Limit-Attitude: The Relationship Between Truth, Power, and the Aesthetics of Existence in Foucault’s Late Works

Abstract

This article examines the concept of “limit-attitude” as a philosophical ēthos that occupies a central place in the later works of Michel Foucault. It explores the interplay between truth, power, and the aesthetics of existence, focusing on Foucault’s reinterpretation of Enlightenment thought. The study highlights his shift from the government of others (biopolitics) to the government of the self (biopoetics), demonstrating that subjectivation occurs through techniques of the self and practices of freedom. It further analyzes parrhēsia and the Cynics’ militant lifestyle as radical manifestations of this attitude. By focusing on the historical ontology of ourselves, the article argues that the limit-attitude functions as a critical attitude enabling individuals to challenge established regimes of truth and reconstruct their lives as ethical, aesthetic, and political creations. By centering Foucault’s post-1980 works on ethics and the art of living, this research highlights an underrepresented dimension in the literature.
