Analysis and Assessment of Flicker in Electric Power Systems

Abstract

Among various power quality disturbances encountered in electrical distribution networks, flicker—caused by rapid load variations—stands out as a critical parameter that adversely affects both user comfort and equipment lifetime. This study investigates flicker phenomena in the regional network of Dicle Elektrik, covering Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa, provinces. Real-time measurements were taken from different transformer stations and evaluated in accordance with IEC 61000-3-3 standards using signal processing and time-series analysis techniques. Parameters such as long-term flicker severity (Plt) were calculated to identify the magnitude and sources of flicker. Additionally, international planning levels were compared using national data. Once prepared for further analysis, the obtained data will facilitate a deeper understanding of the origins of flicker events and assist in developing new solutions to improve power quality management. In conclusion, this thesis expands the knowledge base on flicker analysis in distribution networks, emphasising the importance of flicker detection to ensure the reliability and quality of power distribution systems.
